The Crowstones. 2 Stones are located in the Thames 1 on the Southend -on- sea side of the river the other on the Kent side of the river by the mouth of the river Yantlet. These stones were placed in the Thames to mark the boundary point of jurisdiction for the city of London. First erected in 1285 A.D. The current Crowstone in place at Southend is one of 2 stones that were in place on the Southend side of the river. The older stone was removed to Priory park in Southend were it remains today. Every 7 years the Crowstone on the Southend side of the river was visited by the Lord Mayor of London whose name was engraved on the stone. This continued until 1857 when the city’s jurisdiction was handed to the Port of London Authority. |
