Corporation Jetty
Picture

Built for the sum of £10,878 in 1914 the Corporation Loading Jetty was used mainly for the unloading of Thames barges & lighters that used the Thames for trade. Although the jetty is not of a large scale this due to the fact that most of the goods traffic on the Thames was bound for London or the deep water harbours on the Medway and the fact that the only access to the jetty is at high tide. The jetty did receive some extra additions to its construction for protection during World War II as you can see from the photo below. Most easy to note is the firing point  mounted on the roof of the warehouse area.

The jetty was in constant use until the late 1950’s to early 1960’s when due to the decline for the need of the Thames barges & lighters its use declined. The jetty was subsequently leased out to private businesses. One last usage of the jetty was in the early 1980’s when the site was used to station 2 tugs moored to it. The jetty is now in a derelict state requiring structural work to the pillars to make the site safe to use again.
